THE CLUB
The New Plymouth Surfcasting Club was first formed in 1952. The aims of the club are to foster the sport of surfcasting in the Taranaki area, and to provide regular opportunities for members to meet and discuss a common interest. The club is a non-profit organization and subscriptions are used primarily for sending a monthly Newsletter, association fees, engraving trophies and various costs that are an essential part of running any organization. Trophies are presented at the AGM, which is held in June each year. The club year is 1st of June until the 31st May.
The club is affiliated to the New Zealand Angling & Casting Association (NZACA), so any fish caught by a member is eligible for National Records, Merit Awards and also New Zealand Records. We also have members attending the annual NZACA National Championships with great success. These are hosted by clubs like ourselves.
MEETINGS
We meet on the last Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm in the NP Sportfishing & Underwater Clubrooms, Ocean View Parade. We organize at least two fishing days per month, however these sometimes have to be cancelled due to the inclement weather. One is a ‘Fish Anywhere’ usually with a weigh-in around 4:30 pm at a weigh masters home. The other a ‘Fish Together’ where we all meet and decide where we want to fish and then we have our weigh-in at the beach. A small prize is presented to the winners of both the Senior and Junior section providing they meet the required points.
RECORDING FISH
There are a number of trophies which are competed for annually and all one has to do to compete for these is to ring the Recorder whose name appears on the top of each Newsletter and state the weight and type of each fish caught. Points are allocated on a point per kilo basis according to the species.
CLUB NIGHTS
These appear to be the most popular club activity and over the past few years we have seen videos, tackle talks, sinker making, fish filleting & cooking, ‘Possie’ nights and sometimes just a night to chat with other members. Also we have had various Guest Speakers some from within the fishing industry and others outside.
We trust that this information will give you a little insight into the activities of the club and should you decide to join may your association with us be a happy and long one. Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate in contacting us.
