All fish submitted for NZACA records and Merit Awards must be weighed on officially certified scales. Few clubs can afford the high costs of purchasing and regularly certifying scales. Many therefore use cheaper dial scales for club competitions and take potential record fish to a co-operative retailer (e.g. butcher, dairy, fish shop) whose scales must be certified. The shop keeper, or any other individual other than the angler, witnessing and verifying the weight and measurements of the fish can sign as official weighmaster. Larger fish will generally have to be weighed at a butchers as they normally have scales up to 200 kg capacity.
